A Quiet Legend in the Sunshine: Visiting the Jim Clark Museum

The drive from Hexham to Duns via the A68 is a journey in itself—stunning landscapes, sweeping bends, and the strange, undulating rhythm of long straight Roman roads that rise and fall like something out of a theme park. With the sun shining and the borders looking their best, it was the perfect prelude to visiting a place that’s quietly sacred to motorsport fans: the Jim Clark Museum.

Set in the heart of Duns, this modern museum tells the story of a man who let his driving do the talking. Jim Clark wasn’t about hype. He was fast, precise, and deeply respected—both as a Formula 1 World Champion and as a humble Borders farmer who never lost touch with home.

There were no F1 cars on display when we visited, but the lineup was just as compelling: a Lotus 38 IndyCar in its unmistakable dayglo orange STP livery, a Jaguar D-Type, and a Lotus Cortina, all steeped in history and context. The trophy room was a particular highlight—elegantly presented and quietly powerful. The interactive exhibits also stood out, managing to be both educational and deeply personal.

It’s the kind of place that lingers in your mind after you leave. And in our case, it planted a seed. Not long after, we found ourselves drawn back to the Borders once more—there’s more to come on that front.

If you ever find yourself anywhere near the Scottish Borders, make the time for Duns. It’s not just a museum—it’s a glimpse into the soul of a racing legend.
