Motor supplies original letterhead History

Motor Supplies is more than just a business—it’s a legacy rooted in a deep passion for automobiles. Our story begins in 1937, when my great-grandfather, David Parsons, founded the original Motor Supplies at 236 Rundle Street, Adelaide. His mission was simple: provide quality parts at great prices with unmatched service. His dedication was legendary, often going to great lengths to secure the right part—even if it meant sending his son-in-law, my grandfather Quentin to another supplier. At the same time, he kept the customer engaged in conversation! Back then, the customer never left disappointed and we aim to provide the same customer-focused service.

Though the business changed hands over the years, our family never left the automotive world. My grandfather, initially an electrician at the Port Adelaide power station, requalified as an auto electrician and then a mechanic. He went on to train a generation of mechanics and auto electricians at the School of Mines and Croydon TAFE, instilling in them a deep respect for craftsmanship and knowledge. His passion for classic cars was unwavering restoring a 1926 Model T Ford in 1978 and later adding a stunning 1935 Ford Model C for my grandmother, so they could drive in events together. Both the T and the C are still in the family, and the C even charmed my partner in her first Bay to Birdwood.

The next chapter saw my father step into the world of motorsports. After running a service station and mechanics workshop in Whyalla, he took to racing, pushing the limits of both man and machine. His career included dirt circuit racing in a V8-powered VW Beetle and a winged Cortina, as well as circuit racing in a Formula 3 Lynx and an ASP Clubman. His mechanical expertise led him to roles with RAA, Mazda, and Hyundai—where he became the General Manager for South Australia and the Northern Territory. Eventually, he brought the Motor Supplies name back to life, delivering parts and tools directly to workshops across South Australia.

Then came my turn. My professional journey started with a traineeship at CMI Toyota, followed by hands-on experience with multiple manufacturers and aftermarket suppliers. Beyond standard parts interpreting, I delved into cataloguing, cooling system design, and tracking down obscure components from around the world. My love for cars has always extended beyond work—I spent weekends modifying road cars, scouring wreckers for performance upgrades, and eventually taking the plunge into motorsport. My first real racing experience came at Collingrove Hillclimb, piloting my 1969 Corolla before moving on to a resurrected Formula Vee, pulled from a front yard where grass had grown through its frame. That car taught me more than any workshop ever could—like the unexpected performance drop caused by switching from aviation fuel to modern 98-octane petrol. While the modern fuel gave me more power it came at the cost of constantly fouling plugs.

In recent years, I’ve been fortunate enough to build my own collection of classics. On my 40th birthday, I set off on a road trip to Ballarat to collect a beautifully period-modified 1963 Mini 850—an adventure that rekindled my connection with the Mini Car Club of South Australia. Even more special was the opportunity to buy back my father’s ASP Clubman, a piece of family history restored to its rightful place. And as if fate had a say in it all, my partner recently acquired an 88” and more recently an 86” as well, Series 1 Land Rover, ripe for restoration. Something I plan to post updates on as it goes.
